POSITION TITLE:   Classification Supervisor (SC18)

 

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

             Assists the Assistant Deputy Superintendent of Custody Assessment in the supervision and administrative responsibility for the Classification, Records, Community-Based Pre-Release, and Community Corrections Programs.  Interacts with inmates, detainees, and staff in the course of assignments. Exercises supervision and administrative responsibility for the Records Office. 

Performs related work and duties as required.

 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

            Reports directly to the Assistant Deputy Superintendent of Custody Assessment.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

            Supervises staff assigned to the Classification, Release Programs, and Records Office staff.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1.    Assists in the classification of all inmates sentenced to the House of Correction.  Reviews, analyzes, and assesses all relevant factors involved with the assignment of inmates.  Responsible for all administrative duties involved with the supervision of division employees.
  2. Responsible for all duties pertaining to the proper maintenance of inmate records. These involve, but are not limited to:
    1.  

                         a. sentence computation for all commitments;

                         b. determining the discharge dates for all inmates;

                         c. posting all jail credit submissions;

                         d. posting and monitoring all earned good time;

                         e. tracking all outstanding warrants;

                         f. posting and tracking all court trips;

                                           g. interacting with other criminal justice agencies;

                                           h. supplying reports as requested; 
                                           i. tracking the CORI records;

      j. monitoring compliance with the sex offender registry information;

      k. and the collection of DNA with CODIS.

      l. Responsible for ensuring that all division staff are trained appropriately.

       

  3.  Conducts Classification Boards with inmates in inmate housing units on a scheduled basis.  This also includes Administrative Segregation/Discipline Boards.
  4.  Meets with inmates/detainees on a daily basis, identifying and assessing personal, classification, parole, and programmatic issues affecting their sentence and their re-entry into the community. 
                                                                             
  5.  On a regular basis, touring through inmate/detainee housing units, which includes daily direct contact with inmates/detainees.  Identifies and resolves potential problems not immediately apparent to the inmates/detainees (e.g., discharge date calculation, canteen, classification, parole, discharge issues). 
  6.  Conducts DNA testing. This is involves proper identification, drawing blood from an inmate/detainee, and processing necessary paperwork for submission to the Massachusetts State Police Crime Laboratory.
  7.     Serves as Institutional Grievance Coordinator, interacts with inmates/detainees and staff in the course of assignment.
  8.    Assists in the proper maintenance and care of all inmate records.
  9.    Supervises the intake caseworkers as assigned in compiling the inmate service programs.
 10.  Submits periodic summary reports to appropriate agencies and such other persons as directed by the Assistant Deputy Superintendent of Assessment.
 11.   Supervises assigned personnel and performs all administrative responsibilities assigned.
 12.   Flexibility and ability to learn and perform new duties and skills as assigned.
 13.   Such other duties and assignments as the Sheriff may assign from time to time.

QUALIFICATIONS

 

            1.     Considerable knowledge of the criminal justice system, houses of correction, jails, courts, probation, parole, etc.

             2.     Understands the role of Institutional Community-Based Programs and Community Corrections in a county jail and House of Correction.

            3.     Ability to properly supervise assigned personnel.

            4.     Ability to work in a large correctional facility with all staff and inmates.

            5.     Excellent written and oral communication skills.

            6.     Ability to complete moderate to complex levels of qualitative and quantitative analyses.

            7.     At least two years of experience or Master's Degree in Criminal Justice.
