Description

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Maintains, operates, and repairs Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning (HVAC) equipment throughout the Jail and House of Correction. Assists in the operation and maintenance of emergency stand by generators. Performs related work as required.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the direct supervision of the Chief Engineer.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Assists in the repair and maintenance of all HVAC equipment and emergency standby generators at the Jail (NSJ) and House of Corrections (HOC) as directed.
  1. Monitors all the mechanical rooms and HVAC equipment for proper operation.
  1. Makes adjustments to the Building Management System (BMS) to ensure that all the buildings’ space temperatures and hot water levels are within department and statutory guidelines.
  1. Responds to emergency situations and supports other divisions during emergency situations as requested by the Command staff and/or Chief Engineer.
  1. Takes regularly-scheduled temperature and pressure readings.
  1. Monitors and records temperature and pressure readings.
  1. Complies with all written policies and procedures.
  1. Performs housekeeping duties in all division areas as assigned.
  1. Performs other duties and assignments as may be assigned.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Regular, punctual and predictable attendance at assigned workplace and post.
  1. Assisting in the repair and maintenance of all HVAC equipment and emergency standby generators.
  1. Monitoring all the mechanical rooms and HVAC equipment for proper operation.
  1. Taking regularly scheduled temperature and pressure readings and documenting those readings.
  1. Replacing fan belts, air filters, and other related equipment.
  1. Listening for and addressing equipment alarm notifications in a timely manner;
  1. Availability to work any shift and/or mandatory overtime.
  1. Knowledge of, compliance with, and enforcement of Department, as well as Mechanical Division, policies and procedures;
  1. Compliance with security procedures;
  1. Obeying moderately complex oral and written orders;
  1. Communicating orally and in writing;
  1. Dealing calmly and effectively with stressful situations, including emergencies; and
  1. Exercising good judgment.

MINIMUM PHYSICAL REQUIRMENTS

  1. Ability to lift 50 pounds overhead
  1. Ability to climb up/down stairs
  1. Ability to climb up/down ladders to the institutions roof
  1. Ability to work safely on people lifts at heights.
  1. Ability to do overhead work.
  1. Ability to read instrumentation and document recordings in logbooks and computer programs.
  1. Ability to hear audible alarms.
  1. Ability to effectively communicate with others.
  1. Ability to stand and walk for periods of at least eight (8) hours.

QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Knowledge of standard maintenance procedures for HVAC and Mechanical systems.
  1. Experience working with pipes, machines and equipment with large and small parts preferred.
  1. Experience with safety practices and procedures for installation, maintenance and repair preferred.
  1. Knowledge of emergency stand by generators preferred.
  1. Knowledge of fans, pumps, valves, air handling units, heat and vent units, heat pumps, chillers, and all related HVAC systems preferred.
  1. Familiarity with fire pumps and sprinkler systems preferred.
  1. Familiarity with building management systems preferred.
