POSITION DESCRIPTION
POSITION TITLE: Education Advisor/Career Navigator
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provides minimum of 20 hours/wk. dedicated to identifying residents to be assessed, and administering intake testing in various locations.
- Provides a minimum of 15 hours weekly to educational advising services to 563 AE/CI grant enrolled Suffolk County Department male and female residents and detainees
- Performs related duties as assigned.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Intake Coordinator:
- Creates a testing list for inmates at the Suffolk County House of Correction
- Administers the intake test (currently TABE) to detainees and residents
- Corrects and scores all intake tests
- Records the intake test results
- Reports the intake test results
- Files the intake test results
- Distributes the intake test results to detainees and residents
- Prepares and maintains monthly report statistics
- Performs other duties as the Sheriff may assign
Education Advisor/Career Navigator:
- Depending on assignment, supports residents primarily in adult basic education classes at the Suffolk County House of Correction and the Nashua Street Jail and,
- Assists in the formulation advising practices to determine the most effective methods and materials to meet the needs of the male and female detainees and sentenced individuals
- Depending on assignment, interviews prospective incarcerated students for class placement; assesses and records individual student educational progress and career interest
- Assists with identifying and coordinating transition of HiSET/high school post- secondary education PSED and/or training
- Maintains progress reports on each resident indicating academic development and discusses behavior and educational problems with appropriate staff
- Counsels reidents on educational requirements and any emotional, social or physical problems evidenced in the classroom
- Is responsible for the organization, cleanliness and control of office and meeting areas including class rooms
- Prepares and maintains monthly report statistics indicating number and description of advising sessions and assists with maintenance of student records
- Demonstrates flexibility and ability to learn and perform new duties and skills
- Performs other duties as the Sheriff may assign
QUALIFICATIONS:
- At least one year of full-time or equivalent part-time experience in ABE or ESOL preferred
- Considerable ability to:
- Be detail-oriented
- Be flexible
- Be patient
- listen attentively and work effectively with residents
- maintain a harmonious relationship with staff, community agencies, and clients
- recognize specific educational and substance abuse tendencies
- read, interpret and report educational and career test/assessment scores
- Computer experience required. Working knowledge and comfort using Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word required
- Working knowledge of Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department policies knowledge of education, classification, and therapeutic processes preferable, but not required
- High school diploma or equivalent required; Bachelor’s degree preferred
- Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential
QUALIFICATIONS: Education Advisor
1. Bachelor’s degree in education, psychology, or sociology; Master’s degree in education, psychology or social work preferred
2. At least one year of full-time or equivalent part-time experience in the area of advising or teaching adult learners preferred
a) community resources and programs available to aid residents
b) practices and procedures of advising and case management
- Listen attentively and work effectively with residents
- Maintain a harmonious relationship with staff, community agencies, and clients
- Recognize specific educational and substance abuse tendencies
- Read, interpret and report educational and career test/assessment scores
- Excellent oral and written communication skills essential
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Regular, punctual and predictable attendance at assigned workplace, assigned testing sessions, and at scheduled meetings
- Knowledge of, compliance with, and enforcement of Department policies and procedures
- Compliance with security procedures

- Able to independently initiate a project, execute the necessary steps, and complete in a timely and effective manner
- Deal calmly and effectively with stressful situation, including emergencies
- Exercise good judgment
- Work collaboratively with all internal and external staff
MINIMUM PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT FOR ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Communicate orally to residents
- Sit or stand periodically for 8 hours
- Lift up to 5 pounds
- Carry up to 5 pounds
- Climb stairs occasionally
- Walk short distances, and
- Write and type
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS OF POSITION
Participation in mandatory training
Must be willing and able to work at least two (2) evenings per week (i.e. 12-7 pm, 1-8 pm, 2-9 pm)
